In the history of Buddhism, the state of Andhra Pradesh has a significant role in spreading Dhamma. During 3rd Buddhist council, the elders (Monks) from Andhra Pradesh (Formerly Andhadessa) had participated in large numbers. We even find Andha Attakatha – The commentries by Andras in the  Buddhist Scriptures.

Andhra Pradesh is the land of rich Buddhist heritage and has many Buddhist sites.  Acharya Nagarjuna (150–250 CE) is considered as the most important Buddhist philosopher after the historical Buddha. Along with his disciple Āryadeva, he is credited with founding the Madhyamika school of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Acharya Nāgārjuna is also credited with developing the philosophy of the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras. Even elder Buddhagosha who wrote a treatise on Tripitaka called “VISSUDHIMAGGA” was born in this very Andhra Pradesh.

Buddhism in Andhra Pradesh flourished for over 2000 years through Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. It encouraged the people to transform ideas and ideals into definite and concrete shape especially in forms of art, architecture, philosophy and literature. The cosmopolitan spirit of Buddhism helped to remove the tribal barriers, integrated the people and gave them cultural identity.

The state government has identified 140 Buddhist sites in the Andhra Pradesh. The Buddhist sites in Andhra Pradesh are renowned for historical and archaeological significance, in particular Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, Bavikonda, Thotlakonda, etc.
