About Buddhist Site in Andhradesa !!!

The Amaravati ruins first caught the attention of scholars in the late 19th century and a number of collections of artifacts from Amaravati complex are exhibited in a number of museums around the world. Relic caskets were discovered here during the excavations conducted during the period of 1957-67 at the Mahastupa site.

Nagarjunakonda is an ancient Buddhist monastery complex situated on the banks of the Krishna River. It was a prominent center of learning during ancient times and takes its name from the scholarly monk. The present site is said to have been earlier called Sriparvata (‘Hill of Nagarjuna’). Numerous Buddhist remains have been excavated since its discovery in 1926. The remains unearthed include a Mahastupa, remains of several monasteries and numerous artifacts including inscriptions and sculptures. As the original site was submerged in water during the construction of Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir built in 1960s, these have been reconstructed on higher locations close by. Buddhism had slowly declined from it’s motherland  India due to various factors. But now it is slowly regaining and the glory of Dhamma is widely spreading in India. Today Buddhists in India are minority community. Until 50 years ago there was hardly a handful of Buddhist monks scattered in remote mountain states in India. Although Buddhists are being accepted as minority community, there is no help and support from the government and other communities.

Lot of youngsters are trying to understand and coming forward to know about Buddhism in India. It is our prime duty to motivate and educate about the “Dhamma” as taught by the Buddha. For this we need more monks and Upasakas and Upakasikas in the Sangha to spread the Buddha Dhamma. With few dedicated followers we are trying to revive the lost Buddha Dhamma in state of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana.

It is well known fact that the SIDDHARTHA BUDDHA VIHARA TRUST is an essential centre for accommodating students, trainees, Monks and other pilgrims from Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka and other Buddhists countries around the world. While giving our services to them we are facing problems due to non availability of sufficient space. So now our trust has decided to increase the space area by taking up further civil construction works with a view to provide comfortable accommodation for needy persons who comes from Myanmar, Thailand and other parts of the world.

In view of the facts mentioned above, we, therefore, welcome and fervently request to all Donors, support us and contribute generously for a noble cause and for the construction of Monastery in  Hyderabad Telangana & Andhra Pradesh, India.

“May you and all your family members  Be Happy”

In the history of Buddhism, the state of Andhra Pradesh has a significant role in spreading Dhamma. During 3rd Buddhist council, the elders (Monks) from Andhra Pradesh (Formerly Andhadessa) had participated in large numbers. We even find Andha Attakatha – The commentries by Andras in the  Buddhist Scriptures.

Andhra Pradesh is the land of rich Buddhist heritage and has many Buddhist sites.  Acharya Nagarjuna (150–250 CE) is considered as the most important Buddhist philosopher after the historical Buddha. Along with his disciple Āryadeva, he is credited with founding the Madhyamika school of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Acharya Nāgārjuna is also credited with developing the philosophy of the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras. Even elder Buddhagosha who wrote a treatise on Tripitaka called “VISSUDHIMAGGA” was born in this very Andhra Pradesh.

Buddhism in Andhra Pradesh flourished for over 2000 years through Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. It encouraged the people to transform ideas and ideals into definite and concrete shape especially in forms of art, architecture, philosophy and literature. The cosmopolitan spirit of Buddhism helped to remove the tribal barriers, integrated the people and gave them cultural identity.

The state government has identified 140 Buddhist sites in the Andhra Pradesh. The Buddhist sites in Andhra Pradesh are renowned for historical and archaeological significance, in particular Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, Bavikonda, Thotlakonda, etc.
