If a person performs merit, let him do it repeatedly; he should delight in it: for the accumulation of merit is blissful.

Monolithic Buddha Statue in Hyderabad

Hyderabad is the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Between 1983 and 1989, N. T. Rama Rao served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. During his tenure, he spent large sums to erect several statues of people from the region's political and religious history. During his visit to New York, he saw the Statue of Liberty and was inspired by the efforts to restore it. He said "I wanted something like that ... That would have been my contribution to society. Rama Rao chose to depict Gautama Buddha because "he was a humanitarian who told the whole truth to the people. It is our pride. After a long search, he found a solid granite rock on a mountainside 40 miles outside Hyderabad. For over a year, hundreds of labourers helped the temple architect and builder S.M.Ganapathi Sthapati create the statue. After five years and the expenditure of US$3 million, the statue stood at 58 feet (18 m) and weighed 350 tons, making it the world's tallest monolithic statue of the Buddha. A concrete platform measuring 15 feet (4.6 m), now referred to as the "Rock of Gibraltar, was constructed in the middle of Hussain Sagar to aid in erecting the statue. The roads of the city were also widened for this purpose.

This statue is located at Lumbini Park in the Husain Sagar Island can be reached by boat in 15 minutes.

In the history of Buddhism, the state of Andhra Pradesh has a significant role in spreading Dhamma. During 3rd Buddhist council, the elders (Monks) from Andhra Pradesh (Formerly Andhadessa) had participated in large numbers. We even find Andha Attakatha – The commentries by Andras in the  Buddhist Scriptures.

Andhra Pradesh is the land of rich Buddhist heritage and has many Buddhist sites.  Acharya Nagarjuna (150–250 CE) is considered as the most important Buddhist philosopher after the historical Buddha. Along with his disciple Āryadeva, he is credited with founding the Madhyamika school of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Acharya Nāgārjuna is also credited with developing the philosophy of the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras. Even elder Buddhagosha who wrote a treatise on Tripitaka called “VISSUDHIMAGGA” was born in this very Andhra Pradesh.

Buddhism in Andhra Pradesh flourished for over 2000 years through Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. It encouraged the people to transform ideas and ideals into definite and concrete shape especially in forms of art, architecture, philosophy and literature. The cosmopolitan spirit of Buddhism helped to remove the tribal barriers, integrated the people and gave them cultural identity.

The state government has identified 140 Buddhist sites in the Andhra Pradesh. The Buddhist sites in Andhra Pradesh are renowned for historical and archaeological significance, in particular Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, Bavikonda, Thotlakonda, etc.
